Dental hygiene tips for healthy teeth & gums

What are the signs of needing a root canal?

In order to save the natural tooth and prevent it from being reinfected, root canal therapy or treatment is applied to remove bacteria from an infected root canal. A root canal treatment involves removing inflamed or infected pulp from the tooth. A tooth is then cleaned and sterilized after the pulp is removed, and then it is filled and sealed.

Can root canal treatment be detected by certain symptoms?
Your dentist will be able to tell you for sure whether or not you need a root canal. A tooth can be infected without you realizing it. However, certain symptoms tend to be apparent to people. These symptoms indicate a root canal is necessary:

  • Temperature Sensitivity: If you feel discomfort when drinking hot coffee or eating ice cream, your tooth may need root canal therapy. It is particularly important if the pain lasts for an extended period of time.
  • Infected teeth can develop swelling when pus collects around them. You may experience puffy, swollen, or tender gums as a result of this.
  • Developing a pimple or boil on the gums: It may happen that you develop a pimple or boil on your gums. There may be an unpleasant taste or smell from the pus draining from the pimple from the infected tooth.
  • Bruised jaw: Often, pus does not drain from the area. You may see the swelling of your jaw as a result.
  • Pressure-induced pain: If you experience pain when you bite down on or touch your tooth, the nerves around the pulp may have been damaged.
  • Tooth loosening: The tooth may become loose due to infection. A tooth is weakened as a result of a soft tooth root caused by pus from the infected pulp.

If these symptoms occur together, it may signal a serious infection or decay. Do not wait for the problem to worsen before consulting your dentist. Give them the opportunity to treat the area as soon as possible.
